MoonSpeak:
Visitor From the Red Planet

MoonSpeak's latest single, while no AdLA, is a vast improvement over half of the stuff featured on the lukewarm LP, Manifestation, and I'd like to say that it bodes well for her future, but she's been back and forth with me for awhile now, so, who knows. The song makes ample usage of samples from War of the Worlds. It's a very solid track, giving off that lost-in-space atmosphere that I love and that MoonSpeak is renowned (by me) for. However, it isn't remarkable.

Usually, an artist releases a certain song as a single when he or she feels that it's one of the strongest parts of the album. Being that this song is solid, and but only just, it makes me fear for the future of this project. I'm against releasing singles of individual songs for this reason: "Release your best tracks by themselves, because the rest aren't as good". It gives me no reason to believe that the rest of the music on the LP/EP is even worth listening to. I just don't see the point.

Anyway, the biggest thing I enjoy about this song is that it has many segments that are distinct, yet well-transitioned. I remember going off on some tracks in Manifestation for being too long or repetitious -- this song is average-sized, but it contains a number of changes here and there to keep things interesting. The main riff seems to be a parody on stereotypical cheesy alien music from old b-flicks, and it's a nice touch. Again, though, I hope that's not all her next EP's got.

4/5
